The Fair – An Artists Statement - As a photographer I honor and document the environments I find myself in. I’ve had a growing fascination with the iconic age and shifting landscape of Americana. I found that the classic summer fair was the perfect canvas for capturing this epic time period that is becoming quickly extinguished. Many of the photographs in this collection were taken at Coney Island, New York 2008. Coney Island has had a hand in many of the items and activities that are considered Americana. We can thank Coney Island for bringing Americans their first rollercoaster in 1925. The first hot dog (defined to be in a bun) was served out of a cart on it's famous boardwalk. People flocked here to see their first electric lightbulb and moving picture. In November 2006, Astroland (Coney Island’s amusment park) was sold to Thor Equities which had plans to redevelop the area with condominiums and luxury apartments. Labor Day 2007 was considered the last of the Astroland Era, after the rides had gone dark. Opposition, petitions and local outrage has squeezed through a last ditch agreement for the park to be open one final season. This summer. Following Labor Day 2008, the fate of Astroland is unknown, but will surely be the death of an era as we know it. So these photographs are my tribute and testament of classic Americana. They are part of a larger body of work depicting rollercoasters, ferris wheels, and flying swings. These images are taken digitally and printed on Epson Fine Art Velvet Paper. Additional prints are available for purchase. Please contact me for any more questions or info.
